Jimmy Carter Reveals His Dying Wish as He Nears 100 While in Hospice Care
As former President Jimmy Carter approaches his 100th birthday, he has revealed his final wish while in hospice care at his home in Georgia. Though his health has been declining, the 99-year-old remains remarkably alert and engaged with the world around him.
According to his grandson, Jason Carter, Jimmy Carter’s dying wish is to cast his vote for presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the upcoming November election. Jason shared with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that his grandfather is still deeply interested in current events, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Carter’s Hope to Vote
With the U.S. presidential election scheduled just weeks after his 100th birthday, Jimmy Carter is determined to live long enough to participate in early voting in Georgia, which begins on October 15. Despite being in hospice care for over a year and outliving his wife, Rosalynn, who passed away at 96, Carter remains hopeful about staying alive until he can cast his ballot.
A Public Farewell
Carter was last seen in public at his wife’s funeral in Plains, Georgia, where he was joined by prominent figures like President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. Former First Ladies Michelle Obama, Melania Trump, Laura Bush, and the Clintons were also in attendance.
A Resilient Life
Jimmy Carter has faced numerous health challenges throughout his long life, including a battle with metastatic melanoma in 2015, which spread to his brain but was successfully treated with radiation. In 2019, he suffered several falls, requiring stitches and surgery. Despite these setbacks, Carter remained positive and active for as long as he could. In 2023, after frequent hospital visits, he chose to enter hospice care, where he has since stayed out of the public eye, with only close friends and family by his side.
As he nears the century mark, Carter’s wish to vote one last time is a testament to his enduring commitment to civic duty and the values he has championed throughout his life.
