6 Habits That Can Age You…Check all of them Below!
When you’re young, your main focus often revolves around getting your life together or staying healthy in the moment. With so many aspects to consider, it’s easy to overlook habits that can age you. However, many daily routines significantly impact our long-term health, both mentally and physically. To ensure a long and healthy life, it’s crucial to start evaluating our current habits.
“Our daily activities and dietary intake play a major role in how we look on the outside and how we age on the inside,” says Dr. Robert Huizenga. “Exposure to daily toxins also plays an oversized role in our life expectancy.”
With a greater emphasis on health these days, researchers are gaining a clearer understanding of what benefits us and what harms us in the long run. It’s essential to use this information to adjust our habits and maximize our longevity.
If you’re thinking about preserving your health as you age, consider cutting down on these six habits that can age you both inside and out.

1. Stress
A study from UC San Francisco found that chronic stress increases the risk of age-related diseases. “A certain region of our chromosomes called telomeres functions to protect our DNA,” explains Dr. Nesochi Okeke Igbokwe. “Telomeres shorten in length as we age, and chronic stress has been shown to decrease their length. This means there is a link between chronic stress and aging on a cellular level.”

2. Smoking
Most of us are aware of the negative health effects of smoking, but it also damages the skin. “Smoking causes increased damage to the skin and can lead to premature wrinkles,” says Dr. Igbokwe. “The toxins in cigarette smoke damage the collagen and elastin fibers that keep the skin strong and firm.”

3. Tanning
“Excessive sun exposure is another common cause of aging,” says Dr. Huizenga. “While low levels of sun can help make our bones stronger, higher doses damage the skin beyond its ability to repair, causing loss of youth-giving elastic tissue and eventually cancer.”

4. Not Sleeping
“Sleep deprivation negatively impacts cognitive functioning and can affect the part of the brain that helps store memories,” notes Dr. Igbokwe. “It may also accelerate skin aging. Lack of sleep increases levels of stress hormones like cortisol, which can damage collagen fibers and contribute to wrinkles.”

5. Sitting Around
A sedentary lifestyle, such as spending most of your day on the couch, not only increases the risk of early death but also causes various problems for your muscles and body. “Routine exercise helps prevent many chronic illnesses and can prolong your lifespan,” says Dr. Igbokwe.

6. Eating Junk Food
Your diet significantly affects how you age, impacting both your brain and your skin. A study in the Annals of Neurology found that a diet high in saturated fats, like those found in red meat and dairy, can cause the brain to age more quickly. Additionally, excessive sugar intake leads to wrinkles and saggy skin due to its damaging effect on collagen. “Avoid junk food and heavily processed foods,” advises Dr. Igbokwe. “Ensure you follow a nutrient-rich diet to help prevent premature aging.”
Even if you’ve engaged in these habits, it’s not too late to change. Regardless of your age, altering your habits can increase your chances of leading a youthful, healthy life.
