Thrifted Washboard Farmhouse Makeover

One of my favorite hobbies is uncovering hidden gems at local thrift stores. There’s something deeply satisfying about taking a forgotten, overlooked item and transforming it into something beautiful. Recently, I found the perfect candidate for a farmhouse-inspired DIY project—a vintage washboard that had clearly seen better days.

When I first spotted the washboard, it was weathered, and the metal had a well-worn patina. Despite its condition, I could see its potential as a charming, one-of-a-kind piece for my farmhouse-style decor. Continue Reading…

The first step was to give the washboard a thorough cleaning. I used hot, soapy water and a shish kabob stick to remove the accumulated lint and grime. Once clean and dry, I applied a coat of Rust-Oleum’s Weathered Wood Accelerator in Gray. This helped to even out the wood tones and gave the washboard a lovely, aged finish.

Next, I turned to one of my favorite resources for farmhouse decor—Redesign With Prima’s Everyday Farmhouse transfer collection. I chose the “Rosewood Farm” design and carefully applied it to the center of the washboard. The intricate floral motif and rustic lettering perfectly complemented the vintage look.

To enhance the warmth and character of the wood, I used Dixie Belle’s Big Mama’s Butta. This all-natural blend of hemp seed oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and carnauba wax is perfect for reviving wood surfaces. After applying it to the top board of the washboard, the wood took on a rich, silky sheen, and the Flannel-scented butta added a delightful fragrance. Check VIDEO below…

For the final touch, I added a functional element. I found a divided metal container at Hobby Lobby and, with my husband’s help, attached it to the middle of the washboard’s base. This created a perfect spot to display a small potted plant, some jute, and vintage clothespins, turning the washboard into a charming, multipurpose decor piece that can be displayed on a shelf or hung on the wall.

The process of transforming this thrifted washboard into a stunning farmhouse-inspired piece was incredibly rewarding. With a few key products and some creativity, I was able to breathe new life into an overlooked item and create a unique, one-of-a-kind decor piece that fits perfectly into my rustic, cozy home. I’m thrilled with the result and can’t wait to find more hidden gems to upcycle in the future.
