Award-winning actress and Golden Globe winner Barbara Rush has passed away at the age of 97.
Best known for her roles in Peyton Place and It Came From Outer Space, the beloved actress passed away peacefully, as confirmed by her daughter, Claudia Cowan.
“My wonderful mother passed away peacefully this evening at 5:28,” Cowan shared with Fox News. “I was with her this morning, and I know she was waiting for me to get home safely before transitioning.” She added, “It’s fitting she chose to leave on Easter, as it was one of her favorite holidays. Now, Easter will have an even deeper significance for me and my family.”
Rush’s passing comes just a few months after Cowan posted a heartfelt birthday tribute to her mother on Instagram. In January, she wrote, “She shines like the sun and glows like the moon. Her age doesn’t change the sparkle in her eyes, the kindness in her heart, or the wisdom in her soul. To me, she is 97 years young.”
Throughout her illustrious career, Rush worked with many notable actors, including Marlon Brando and Dean Martin. She was particularly known for the melodramas she starred in during the 1950s. Her big break came in the 1953 science fiction horror film It Came From Outer Space, for which she won a prestigious Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer – Female.
She continued to achieve success, starring alongside Frank Sinatra in Robin and the Seven Hoods (1964) and Come Blow Your Horn (1963). Rush also had a significant impact on television, most famously portraying Marsha Russell in the popular soap opera Peyton Place.
In addition to Peyton Place, Rush appeared in other soap operas, including playing Eudora Weldon on NBC’s Flamingo Road.
Rush was married three times, first to actor Jeffrey Hunter in 1950, then to publicist Warren Cowan in 1959, and finally to sculptor Jim Gruzalski in 1970. She had lived her final years away from the spotlight of Hollywood.
In February, Claudia shared a picture of herself and her mother on Instagram, writing, “Time with my mom is extra special these days. As her time runs out, I’m going to see her as often as I can to show her how much I love and appreciate her. And so that I know in my heart, neither of us has to worry.”
