Kids today would probably look at a VHS tape, a landline phone, or a Walkman and have no clue what they are. Growing up during a tech boom, it’s amazing how quickly everyday items that were once essential have become obsolete.
I’ll admit, when I first saw the object in the picture below, I had no idea what it was. I could tell it was some kind of metal tool, but beyond that, I was stumped. Do you remember or recognize this object?
Does it look familiar now? It’s an old oil can opener spout! While it might seem ancient, it actually dates back to the 1980s. Back then, people used this tool to puncture a hole in the top of an oil can, and the spout was for pouring the oil. Though simple in design, it’s quite ingenious.
When I think of the ’80s, it feels like just yesterday. It’s hard to believe that was over 40 years ago! While these openers aren’t widely used anymore, I bet plenty of people still have one tucked away in their garage. And of course, collectors—especially mechanics—love them! So, if you ever spot one at a yard sale or an antique shop, it might be worth picking up this little piece of history.
