In a recent interview with The Guardian, Cher opened up about her anxieties over the possibility of Donald Trump being re-elected as president, saying she might not be “strong enough” to endure another term under his leadership. The “Believe” singer expressed her deep concern, stating, “I almost got an ulcer the last time. If he gets in, who knows? This time I will leave [the country].”
Cher, a longtime critic of Trump, has never held back her disdain for his presidency. She referred to him as a “f—ing traitor” on X (formerly Twitter) back in 2016 and accused him of doing “so much damage” to America in a 2018 interview with The Washington Post.
A significant part of her worries revolves around the future of trans rights in America. As the mother of Chaz Bono, who is trans, Cher expressed her concerns for the trans community, pointing out that there are “something like 500 bills they’re trying to pass” against trans rights. “I was with two trans girls the other night… I was saying, ‘We’ve got to stand together.’ I don’t know what their eventual plan is for trans people. I don’t put anything past them.”
Cher also touched on her Armenian heritage, particularly in light of the ongoing tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which she’s been vocal about on social media. Her connection to her roots deepened after a trip to Armenia’s capital, Yerevan. “When I got there, I thought, ‘Wow, everybody looks like me! How could I not have strong feelings about this?’” she shared.
Aside from politics, Cher recently released a 13-track Christmas album, featuring collaborations with Stevie Wonder and Cyndi Lauper, alongside covers of classics and original tracks. She’s proud of how eclectic the album turned out, noting, “I was really happy that it was eclectic, and it’s really eclectic. I was proud of it myself.”
With her bold statements and ongoing activism, Cher continues to stand by her convictions, unafraid to speak her mind about the future of America, politics, and her personal journey. What would you say in response to Cher’s thoughts on leaving the country if Trump were re-elected?
