Known as the “Queen of Country Pop,” Shania became a global sensation in the 1990s, but her journey to stardom was far from easy. Born Eilleen Regina Edwards on August 28, 1965, in Windsor, Ontario, Shania later adopted the last name Twain after her mother, Sharon, married Jerry Twain. Growing up, Shania’s biological father was absent, and she never publicly acknowledged him as her dad. Instead, her stepfather, Jerry, stepped in, raising Shania and her two sisters as his own, even legally adopting them. Shania has often expressed her deep gratitude for Jerry, saying, “My father (Jerry) went out of his way to raise three daughters that weren’t even his. For me to acknowledge another man as my father, a man who was never there for me as a father, who wasn’t the one who struggled every day to put food on our table, would have hurt him terribly.”

Shania’s early life in the rural town of Timmins, Canada, was filled with financial struggles. Jerry, a full-blooded Ojibway, worked tirelessly, but the family still faced extreme poverty. There were times when Shania and her sisters didn’t have enough to eat, often surviving on simple meals like “goulash,” made from dry bread, boiled milk, and brown sugar. During the harsh Canadian winters, Shania even had to wear bread bags on her feet in place of proper boots because her family couldn’t afford them.

Despite these challenges, Shania kept her family’s struggles private, fearing that revealing their situation could lead to them being separated by authorities. Her home life was also tumultuous, with her mother and stepfather’s marriage facing many difficulties. At one point, Shania persuaded her mother to leave Jerry, and they sought refuge in a homeless shelter in Toronto. However, when Shania was 16, her mother decided to return to Jerry and give their marriage another try.
