With heavy hearts, we report the passing of Len Goodman, a beloved icon from Dancing With the Stars, at the age of 78.
Goodman, who served as a judge on the show from 2005 to 2018, died on Saturday at a hospice in Kent, southern England, following a long battle with bone cancer. Surrounded by family in his final moments, his manager, Jackie Gill, confirmed the news on Monday.
Born in London in 1944, Goodman didn’t start dancing until he was 19, yet he quickly became a renowned ballroom dancer before transitioning to television. He also served as the head judge on the British counterpart of Dancing With the Stars, BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, from its inception in 2004 until his retirement in 2016, after which Shirley Ballas took over his position.
BBC director-general Tim Davie led the tributes, calling Goodman a “wonderful, warm entertainer who was loved by millions.” Davie also remarked, “Len was the heart of Strictly. He made everyone feel like they were part of his family, and his presence will be deeply missed by viewers, friends, and family alike.”
Fellow judge Bruno Tonioli shared a heartfelt post with a photo of himself and Goodman holding hands, saying, “Heartbroken my dear friend and partner for 19 years, the one and only ballroom LEGEND #LenGoodman passed away. I will treasure the memories of our adventures… there will never be anyone like you—you will always be my perfect 10.”
In addition to his TV career, Goodman ran the Goodman Dance Academy in Kent and authored several books, including his autobiography Better Late Than Never: From Barrow Boy to Ballroom. His legacy as a ballroom legend and television icon will be cherished forever.
Rest in peace, Len Goodman. 💔
