Apple has confirmed that its upcoming iOS 18 update will only be compatible with more recent models of iPhone, leaving many older devices unsupported.
The tech giant announced the release of iOS 18, the latest update to the software powering its hugely popular devices. This update introduces several new features, including the integration of AI into Apple’s smartphones. Additionally, it includes updates such as the ability to lock certain apps on an iPhone, even though many apps like WhatsApp, ProtonMail, and banking apps already offer options to require FaceID or a passcode for access.
One notable feature of iOS 18 is the ability to send money by simply holding your iPhone close to another device. Users will also be able to hide certain apps from view or place them in a hidden folder. In the Messages app, users will, for the first time, be able to schedule messages to send later rather than sending them immediately.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, stated: “We are thrilled to introduce iOS 18. It is a huge release with incredible features, including new levels of customization and capability, a redesigned Photos app, and powerful ways to stay connected with Messages.”
A significant highlight of the new update is the inclusion of AI, which Federighi described as marking “the beginning of a tremendously exciting new era of personal intelligence with Apple Intelligence delivering intuitive, powerful, and instantly useful experiences that will transform the iPhone experience, all with privacy at the core.”
However, users with older iPhone models may be disappointed to find that they cannot download the new operating system. The update is only available for newer iPhone models. The supported models include:
- iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max

Therefore, if you have an iPhone X or earlier, you will not be able to download iOS 18.
